. As HHMC, German Experts Deepen Health Reforms Collaboration
Jubilation has erupted across Aboh Mbaise, Ngor Okpala and Ihitte-Uboma Local Government Areas of Imo State following the commencement of major reconstruction and upgrading works at the General Hospitals in the three areas.
Residents and community leaders have welcomed the development with excitement, describing it as a significant step towards restoring quality public healthcare closer to their communities and another demonstration of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s determination to transform the state’s healthcare infrastructure.
The projects form part of the administration’s wider healthcare reform programme, which seeks to build a modern, accessible and responsive public healthcare system across Imo State.
For communities in the three LGAs, the reconstruction offers renewed hope of accessing better medical services closer to home, while providing healthcare professionals with improved working environments and facilities.
The intervention is also part of a broader expansion of healthcare infrastructure across the state. Construction of new General Hospitals in Isiala Mbano, Ideato South and Nwangele is nearing completion, further expanding the emerging network of public healthcare facilities.
At the centre of the effort to ensure that these investments translate into effective healthcare delivery is the Heartland Hospitals Management Corporation (HHMC), which is responsible for the management and coordination of public hospitals and healthcare institutions under the state’s reform architecture.
The Corporation’s focus extends beyond infrastructure to professional hospital management, manpower development, equipment management, quality assurance and improved patient experience.
This focus was further reinforced this week with the visit of German medical consultants and healthcare professionals from Integromed Germany to the HHMC headquarters in Owerri.
The delegation, led by the Managing Director of Integromed Germany, Dr. Soliman Ibrahim, engaged the HHMC management, led by its MD/CEO, Dr. Emmanuel Ogueri, on areas of technical collaboration, including healthcare training, equipment management and maintenance, fire safety, and infection prevention and control.
The engagement followed the delegation’s meeting with Governor Hope Uzodimma at the Government House, where the broader partnership to support the state’s healthcare reforms was discussed.
The German experts are expected to provide technical support and capacity-building for healthcare personnel, with an initial pilot intervention across five hospitals. The partnership is designed to strengthen local expertise through hands-on training and knowledge transfer while improving hospital operations and clinical services.
Dr. Ogueri, while receiving the delegation, expressed the Corporation’s readiness to support the initiative and commended Governor Uzodimma for the political will and bold reforms driving the transformation of the sector.
The development reflects a growing emphasis of the reform programme: building modern hospitals while simultaneously strengthening the people, systems and technical capacity required to operate them effectively.
For residents of Aboh Mbaise, Ngor Okpala and Ihitte-Uboma, the machinery now working at their General Hospitals represents the return of hope that modern healthcare can once again be available within their communities.
