● He’s principled, a man of integrity
An elder statesman and the oldest legal practitioner in Imo State, Chief Peter Mgbenwelu(Dum-Dum) has been described as “a man of principle and integrity whose life has been guided by an unwavering devotion to justice and humanity.”
The former governor of Imo State, Dr Ikedi Ohakim, stated this in his tribute in honour of Chief Mgbenwelu on his 87th birthday anniversary. According to Ohakim, he is felicitating with Mgbenwelu with immense joy, deep respect, and admiration. “Yours has been a life steeped in principle marked by integrity and guided by an unwavering commitment to justice and humanity,” he posited.
The former governor noted that as a distinguished legal luminary, “Mgbenwelu’s towering contributions to the legal profession and his tireless pursuit of truth and fairness have left enduring imprints on many including myself.”
He pointed out that “87 years is not merely a number; it is a testimony of divine grace, strength of character, and a legacy built on purpose.” He said that Mgbenwelu has not only witnessed history but have helped to shape it through “his wisdom, mentorship, and exemplary life.”
Ohakim further opined that Mgbenwelu’s “unshakeable faith in God and devotion to the values that ennoble our society and justice system shall continue to inspire generations.”
“On this day of thanksgiving and celebration,I join your family, friends colleagues, and countless Nigerians to thank God for the gift of your life. May God continue to bless you with good health, peace of mind, and the joy that comes from a life well lived,” Ohakim prayed.
It would be recalled that Chief Peter Mgbenwelu, as the oldest legal practitioner in Imo State,became a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1965. This year marks both his 60 years of post Call-to-Bar experience as well as his 87th birthday anniversary.
