The Executive Chairman of Owerri Municipal Council, Hon. Chidiebere Emeribe, has given a directive,prohibiting residents from blocking public roads or using government facilities for burials, receptions, and other private activities without obtaining official clearance.This is contained
in a public service announcement on September 22 2025. The council boss expressed concern over the increasing practice of individuals and groups obstructing government roads and converting schools premises and open spaces into venues for social events without authorization.
The Chairman emphasized that such actions disrupt traffic, endanger public safety, and put government property at risk. He stated that henceforth, families, groups, or individuals must obtain prior approval from the council before hosting any private function in public facilities.
According to him,“These measures are not to inconvenience residents but to ensure free flow of traffic, protection of public property, and the safety and security of our people,” Hon. Emeribe explained.
He warned that legal and disciplinary action would be taken against defaulters, urging residents to comply in the collective interest of the municipality. The council also assured law-abiding citizens of its continued commitment to keeping Owerri Municipal safe, organized, and progressive.
