Former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Hon. (Engr.) Gerald Irona, and his wife, Ogbuefi Vivian Irona, have paid glowing tributes to the late Senator Francis Arthur Nzeribe, describing him as a father figure, mentor, benefactor and remarkable statesman whose influence continues to endure years after his death.

The couple made the tribute to commemorate what would have been the late senator’s 88th birthday on Monday, November 2, 2026.

In a joint posthumous birthday message, Irona expressed profound gratitude for Nzeribe’s fatherly guidance, generosity and support, recalling how the late political icon took him under his wings, believed in him and played an invaluable role in shaping his journey in public service.

He described Nzeribe, fondly known by his traditional titles as Ogbuagu, Oshiji and Damanze Oyimba, as more than a distinguished politician and statesman, saying he was a father, mentor and benefactor whose counsel and encouragement left a lasting impression on his life.

“Your fatherly counsel, generosity and unwavering support remain gifts I will forever cherish,” Irona said, reflecting on the personal relationship he shared with the late senator.

The former deputy governor noted that Nzeribe’s passing had left a void that time had not filled, adding that Oguta, Orlu Zone, Imo State, the Igbo nation and Nigeria had lost a remarkable son whose courage, convictions and larger-than-life personality left an enduring imprint on the nation’s history.

Irona and his wife also acknowledged the late senator’s uncommon kindness and the opportunities he created for others, observing that his legacy remains alive through the many lives he touched and the memories he left behind.

“Great men never truly die; they live on through the lives they inspire and the legacies they leave behind,” the couple stated.

They concluded by celebrating Nzeribe’s life and contributions, describing him as a father, mentor and friend whose memory would continue to be cherished.

The tribute adds to the enduring recognition of Senator Nzeribe’s place in the political and social history of Imo State and Nigeria, particularly among those who experienced his personal generosity and influence.
