The Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Imo State Council, presided over by the Chairman, Comrade Ifeanyi Nwanguma, JP, commenced at 3:15 p.m. with robust deliberations on issues affecting the Union, Imo State, and the nation at large.

RESOLUTIONS

  1. Congress congratulated Comrade Eze Adiukwu on his emergence as NUJ Vice President, South East Zone, and pledged total support for his programmes and initiatives.
  2. The Union called on the Governor of Imo State, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, to sustain the prestigious Imo Media Awards and reward outstanding Journalists of the 2023 edition.
  3. Congress drew the attention of the State Government to the deplorable condition of rural roads, particularly in the Aboh Mbaise axis, and urged urgent rehabilitation measures.
  4. The Union commended the Imo State Government on its efforts toward improving the security architecture of the State, while urging security agencies to parade the notorious criminal known as Gentle de Yahoo, who has continually terrorized citizens.
  5. Congress urged the Governor to direct security agencies to stop herdsmen from parading cattle along streets and major roads across the State.
  6. The Union resolved to set up an Electoral Committee to midwife credible elections on or before November 2025, in line with the expiration of the tenure of the current Executive Council led by Comrade Ifeanyi Nwanguma. The Committee members were subsequently inaugurated.
  7. Congress raised concerns over the increasing intimidation and harassment of Journalists and called on the Union to promptly document and report such cases.
  8. Ideas were proposed for the Union to organize a homecoming ceremony in honour of the South East Vice President of NUJ, and to design programmes that will foster constructive interactions between Journalists and critical stakeholders.
