Chief Charles Orie is a renowned businessman, philanthropist, and politician. Popularly known as “Akuatuegwu” by his admirers, he rose to prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s as one of the youngest and most successful entrepreneurs in Imo State.
PHILANTHROPY
Chief Charles Orie has dedicated much of his life to the welfare of others. He has awarded scholarships to numerous young men and women, provided support for widows and vulnerable families, and offered financial assistance to students in tertiary institutions.
His unwavering commitment to humanitarian service has positively impacted countless lives across Imo State and beyond. He is widely recognized as a man who gives not just from his wealth, but from his heart.
POLITICAL JOURNEY
Although Chief Charles Orie was involved in politics behind the scenes for many years, he formally entered frontline politics in 1993. He served as one of the Coordinators of the Bashir Tofa/Sylvester Ugo Presidential Campaign in Imo State under the National Republican Convention (NRC) during the 1993 presidential election.
From 1993 to the present, he has played a significant role in supporting and funding politicians across different political parties. During his tenure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he maintained strong relationships with party leadership and supported the election of numerous politicians across the state and beyond.
In 2018, he resigned from the PDP and became an active member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was a close political ally of the late Chief Evan Enwerem during his tenure as Governor of Imo State, and he also enjoyed a cordial working relationship with the then Military Administrator of Imo State, Captain James Aneke.
Over the years, Chief Charles Orie has remained an influential figure in the political development of Imo State. He has contributed to the emergence and sustenance of successive governments through strategic political engagement and leadership.
Today, Hon. Chief Charles Orie remains one of the closest allies and trusted confidants of the Governor of Imo State, His Excellency, Senator Hope Uzodinma.
GOVERNORSHIP ASPIRATION
In 2024, Chief Charles Orie declared his intention to contest the Imo State governorship election scheduled for 2027, with the vision of assuming office in January 2028.
His campaign is anchored on the theme “Farewell to Poverty,” which emphasizes economic empowerment, fairness, equity, and inclusive development for all citizens of Imo State. Special attention will be given to the oil-producing communities of Ohaji/Egbema, Oguta, and Oru East.
His advocacy for equity and balanced political leadership for the oil-producing local government areas predates the wider campaign for the Charter of Equity within the Owerri Zone.
As he continues consultations with stakeholders at home and in the diaspora, many believe that his extensive experience in business, philanthropy, and politics uniquely positions him as a capable leader with the vision and capacity to deliver purposeful, inclusive, and people-centered governance for Imo State.
