The Nigeria Police Force has commenced disciplinary proceedings against a police sergeant captured in a viral social media video allegedly displaying conduct considered inconsistent with the standards and ethics of the Force.

In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, and dated May 10, 2026, the Police said the officer was identified as a sergeant attached to the Ikole-Ekiti Divisional Police Headquarters in Ekiti State after the video surfaced online.

According to the statement, the Ekiti State Police Command swiftly took the officer into custody pending disciplinary measures. The Command also confirmed that the officer would undergo comprehensive psychological and medical evaluations as part of the procedures leading to formal disciplinary action.

The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, was said to have ordered the assessment, describing it as a necessary step to address both the alleged misconduct and any possible underlying health concerns connected to the incident.

Reacting to the development, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, condemned the officer’s conduct, describing it as a serious breach of discipline, professionalism and decorum expected from personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Force reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on substance abuse and all forms of behaviour capable of tarnishing the image of the police or weakening public confidence in the institution.

The statement further assured members of the public that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to accountability, professionalism and maintaining discipline among its personnel nationwide.
