Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has commissioned a 5MVA power station and three retrofitted hostels while flagging off the construction of key infrastructure projects at Abia State University (ABSU).
In a statement signed by Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ctz. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, and dated March 27, 2026, the projects were unveiled as part of activities marking the university’s 30th to 32nd combined convocation ceremony held on Friday.
The commissioned projects include the upgraded power station, enhanced from 2.5MVA capacity, as well as renovated Hostels A, B, and C. The governor also performed foundation-laying ceremonies for a 5,000-bed female hostel, a 5,000-bed male hostel, new Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Law buildings, and a 1.8km internal road network within the institution.
Speaking during the event, Governor Otti said the essence of governance is solving problems, noting that the power project represents a fulfillment of earlier promises to improve electricity supply to the university and surrounding communities.
He disclosed that his administration had already signed a contract for a dedicated power line to serve the university, Uturu, and adjoining areas, with plans for future expansion into renewable energy.
The governor also emphasized the need to centralize the university’s campuses in Uturu, except for the teaching hospital in Aba, to enhance administrative efficiency and academic development.
On student welfare, Otti explained that the retrofitting of the hostels was aimed at improving living conditions, boosting the learning environment, and promoting academic excellence, adding that ongoing upgrades across the institution were already gaining momentum.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ndukwe Okeudo, commended the governor for the interventions, noting that the projects would address accommodation challenges and strengthen the university’s capacity.
Also speaking, the Students’ Union Government President, Comrade Emmanuel Ugwuanyi, expressed appreciation to the governor on behalf of the students and presented him with a gift in recognition of his contributions.
The event attracted a large turnout of students, who accompanied the governor during the commissioning of completed projects and the flag-off of new ones.
