The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has clarified that Nigerians in the United Kingdom participating in the ongoing special passport intervention exercise are not required to pay any charges beyond the officially approved passport fees.

In a statement signed by Alao Babatunde, Special Adviser to the Minister on Media and Publicity, on September 7, 2026, the ministry said applicants are expected to pay $150 for a five-year passport and $230 for a 10-year passport, excluding applicable bank charges.

The clarification followed complaints and concerns over inconveniences reportedly experienced by Nigerians in the UK during the application and processing of their international passports.

The special intervention exercise was introduced to provide Nigerians in the UK with additional options for processing their passport applications.

The ministry stressed that neither the Ministry of Interior nor the Nigeria Immigration Service had introduced any additional charges beyond the approved fees.

It also disclosed that consultations are ongoing with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to address the challenges being experienced by applicants and ensure that the inconveniences do not continue.

The government further encouraged applicants to take advantage of the contactless biometric passport application system, describing it as a seamless option for processing passport applications.

The ministry reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving services for Nigerians at home and abroad and providing support to citizens facing difficulties in accessing government services.
