The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has carried out an operational visit to Plateau State following the recent attack in Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area, which resulted in the loss of several lives.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, and dated April 3, 2026, in Abuja.
According to the statement, the police chief condemned the March 29 attack and, upon arrival in the state, paid a condolence visit to Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, commiserating with the government and people over the tragedy. He also visited the affected Angwan Rukuba community for an on-the-spot assessment.
The statement noted that upon receiving distress calls, the Nigeria Police Force launched a swift and coordinated response, deploying the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Usman Nadada, and the Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Police Mobile Force, Francis Iwu. The operation also involved eight units of the Police Mobile Force, the Special Intervention Squad, and other tactical teams working in collaboration with the military.
It added that the situation has been largely brought under control through sustained security operations and engagements with local authorities, community leaders, and youth groups. Security personnel remain deployed across strategic locations, while intelligence-led efforts are ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
The Inspector-General emphasised that operations would continue until normalcy is fully restored, warning against reprisals and acts of vigilantism, which could further escalate tensions.
The statement further quoted Governor Mutfwang as commending the police for their prompt response, particularly acknowledging the efforts of the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, and the role of the Police Mobile Force in containing the crisis.
The governor, however, stressed the need for structural reforms, including the establishment of state police, and called for the adoption of modern policing tools such as surveillance drones to strengthen security operations. He also urged intelligence units to intensify efforts, while pledging continued support to security agencies despite existing logistical challenges.
The IGP assured that he would brief the President and Commander-in-Chief on the current security situation, while calling on residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and supportive of ongoing operations by providing credible information to security agencies.
