A mobile court sitting in Owerri, the Imo State capital, on Thursday November 6, 2025 convicted eleven persons for improper disposal of refuse within Owerri, the capital city of Imo State.

The eleven persons were among a total of thirteen arrested by the officials of Imo State Orientation Agency, during a midnight and early morning raid, and brought before the mobile court presided over by Magistrate Obidimuto Ihegboro, who imposed on the convicts various fines but with the option of doing community service.

Mr. Ihegboro however cautioned residents of Owerri to desist from acts capable of undermining the state’s environment standards, warning that offenders would face stiffer penalties.

Addressing journalists at the end of the session, the Director-General of Imo State Orientation Agency, Dr. Ethelbert Okere, reaffirmed the government’s resolve to strictly enforce the instant sanitation laws in the state as part of the vision of Governor Hope Uzodinma to bequeath a clean and healthy environment to the state.

Okere added that henceforth, homes and business premises owners who allow indiscriminate dumping of refuse in their surroundings will be brought before the mobile court in accordance with the state sanitation laws, vowing that the mobile court will sit every forth-night to try offenders until sanity returns.
