The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 9 Headquarters, Umuahia, AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu, has emphasized the need for a stronger partnership between the Police and the media to enhance security and promote peace across the Zone.
Uzuegbu made the call when he received the newly inaugurated leadership of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State Council, led by its Chairman, Deacon Steve Oko, during a courtesy visit to the Zonal Headquarters in Umuahia.
In a statement issued Nov. 5, 2025 by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Spokesperson Iheanetu Bruno Chukwudera, Uzuegbu warned criminal elements operating within the Zone to desist from unlawful activities, assuring that the full weight of the law would be brought against anyone found threatening public peace or safety.
The AIG reaffirmed the commitment of the Zone 9 Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, to the protection of lives and property across its jurisdictions. He also assured residents of intensified security measures ahead of the Christmas and New Year festivities.
Describing journalists as key partners in nation-building, Uzuegbu urged media practitioners to uphold professionalism, accuracy, and ethical reporting. He called for developmental and peace-driven journalism that supports unity and social stability, while warning against the spread of fake news and sensational reports.
According to the statement, Uzuegbu reiterated the Command’s readiness to maintain open communication channels with journalists and pledged continued collaboration to ensure effective information sharing and public enlightenment.
Responding, the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel Chairman, Deacon Steve Oko, commended the Zone 9 Command for its efforts in maintaining peace and security within the region. He said the visit aimed to strengthen the existing cordial relationship between the media and the Police, and to deepen collaboration in promoting public safety.
Oko also appealed to security personnel, especially those at checkpoints, to remain courteous and professional in their duties, while urging the Police Authorities to sustain efforts at addressing unprofessional conduct within the Force.
The courtesy visit ended with both parties reaffirming their commitment to partnership in the collective pursuit of peace and security across the Zone.
