The transformation of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic in Aba, Abia State, reflects the power of visionary leadership. Under the guidance of Governor Alex Otti, the institution has undergone significant changes, driven by the efforts of Mr. Stanley Egege, Chairman of the Governing Council, and Dr. Christopher Kalu Okoro, Rector of the Polytechnic. Egege’s leadership has been instrumental in implementing Governor Otti’s vision for the institution. His commitment to excellence has led to notable improvements in infrastructure, academic programs, and staff welfare.
At the 19th-21st combined convocation ceremony, Egege expressed deep gratitude to Governor Otti for his unwavering support, highlighting a brighter future for the institution. He announced plans to commence academic activities at the Arongwa Campus in Osisioma LGA, expected to enhance educational opportunities and boost the institution’s reputation.
Also, in a recent interview, Egege shared his insights on the polytechnic’s journey. He described the institution’s state before his appointment as “more like an abandoned place” in terms of infrastructure and personnel. However, under his leadership, the Governing Council has set policies and direction, forming linkages with government and non-government agencies to recreate a conducive learning environment. Egege also expressed confidence in the institution’s direction, disclosing plans to reposition the polytechnic to compete favorably with other global institutions.
Egege praised Governor Otti’s hands-on approach and personal commitment to developing the institution. The council’s short-term and long-term plans focus on producing employable graduates and providing globally accepted skilled labour. According to Egege, staff cooperation has been welcoming, with notable developments in welfare and institutional growth.
Also worthy of note is the ability of Egege’s leadership to introduce innovative programs, including Artificial Intelligence, Autotronics, Mechatronics, Film and Multimedia Production, Journalism, and Mass Media Studies. These programs are strategically designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to compete in the global job market.
The institution has equally made significant strides in infrastructure development, including the renovation of the administrative building, construction of a modern sports arena, and equipping of a newly built science block. Furthermore, the polytechnic has installed a 33KVA generator to ensure a stable power supply and cleared a ₦30 million gas bill, reducing operational costs.
These developments underscore Governor Otti’s commitment to education and his administration’s efforts to revitalize the sector. Historically, Governor Otti and his administration allocated 20% of the 2025 budget to education, focusing on retrofitting and renovating primary and secondary schools, capacity development, and training for teachers.
The renaming of Abia State Polytechnic to Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic is a fitting tribute to the late former governor’s legacy. Dr. Onu known for his commitment to education and technology. Governor Otti’s decision to immortalize him by renaming the polytechnic reflected his administration’s respect for the late former governor’s contributions to Abia State’s development.
There is no gainsaying that the transformation of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic remains a testament to the collaborative efforts of Governor Otti, Hon. Egege, and Dr. Okoro. Their dedication to excellence has led to significant improvements in the institution, positioning it for a bright future. Egege’s leadership has been instrumental in driving and implementing Governor Otti’s vision for the institution, and his efforts are commendable. The polytechnic’s progress is obviously a shining example of what can be achieved through effective leadership and a commitment to excellence.
