The Imo State Police Command on Tuesday held a walkathon in Owerri as part of activities marking Day Two of the 2026 National Police Week, aimed at promoting peaceful elections and discouraging electoral violence among residents.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Okoye Henry, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, and dated March 31, 2026, the Command said the exercise was designed to sensitize the public on the dangers associated with electoral violence and the need for active civic responsibility.

The road walk, which took place along Wetheral Road within the Owerri metropolis, sought to raise awareness and encourage citizens to support security agencies in ensuring a safe environment for free, fair, and credible elections.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, stressed that electoral violence poses a serious threat to democracy and societal peace. He urged residents to shun all forms of violence and unlawful conduct, while calling for cooperation with security agencies to maintain law and order throughout the electoral period.

Participants in the walkathon included members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), and other security agencies such as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Representatives of Alliance for Africa, a non-governmental organization, and other stakeholders also took part in the exercise.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening community partnership, enhancing public trust, and promoting civic responsibility, in line with the theme of this year’s celebration, “Community Partnership: Building Trust.”

Residents of the state were encouraged to remain law-abiding and continue supporting the Police in maintaining peace and security, as further activities for the Police Week are expected to continue in the coming days.
