Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has approved the erection of monuments in honour of Abia women, describing them as pillars of strength whose contributions to society deserve lasting recognition. The Governor made the announcement during the burial ceremony of Mrs. Chiamaka Joyce Ibekwe, wife of the lawmaker representing Bende North State Constituency, Nnamdi Ibekwe, held at Onu-Igbere in Bende Local Government Area.
The statement was signed by Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, and dated April 8, 2026.
Responding to a request by Hon. Ibekwe, Governor Otti emphasized that the proposal to immortalise Abia women was not personal but a collective recognition of their historical and societal impact. He assured that the request would not only be considered but approved, noting that such monuments would inspire women who contribute tirelessly to the growth of society.
The Governor also called for increased participation of women in governance, particularly in the Abia State House of Assembly. He challenged lawmakers to create opportunities for female representation ahead of the 2027 elections, suggesting that even a modest inclusion would mark significant progress from the current all-male composition.
Governor Otti further expressed condolences to Hon. Ibekwe, describing the late Mrs. Ibekwe as a “gift from God” whose life and legacy should be celebrated. He urged the family and loved ones to take solace in her impactful life and unwavering faith.
Tributes at the ceremony highlighted the deceased as a devout Christian, a woman of prayer, and a role model. In her sermon, Rev. Mrs. Oyiks Alfred encouraged mourners to remain hopeful, emphasizing the promise of eternal life in Christ.
In his remarks, Hon. Ibekwe described his late wife as selfless and deeply committed to spiritual growth, noting her lasting influence on family and community. He reiterated his call for monuments to honour Abia women, referencing their historic contributions dating back to the Aba Women’s Riot.
Late Mrs. Chiamaka Joyce Ibekwe, aged 46, is survived by her husband, four children, and extended family. The funeral was attended by top government officials, including the Governor’s wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu, Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa, and other dignitaries.
