The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced the disbursement of ₦53.7 million to families of 34 deceased police officers as part of activities marking the National Police Day 2026.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, and dated April 2, 2026, the Command said the presentation was made by the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

According to the statement, the total sum of ₦53,755,844.94 was presented during the ongoing Police Week celebration to support families of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

CP Azare was quoted as describing the occasion as both solemn and significant, noting that it serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by officers who died protecting society. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to the welfare of the families left behind.

“The cheques being presented today are not mere financial instruments. They represent our collective gratitude and commitment to the families of our fallen heroes,” the statement quoted him as saying, while acknowledging that no amount of money can replace the lives lost.

The statement also noted that the Commissioner commended the Inspector-General of Police for his commitment to improving personnel welfare, including timely payment of benefits and enhanced support systems within the Force.

He further urged serving officers to honour their fallen colleagues through dedication, professionalism, and continued service to humanity.

One of the beneficiaries, Michael Michael Urua, was quoted as expressing appreciation to the Nigeria Police Force for standing by the families in their time of grief.

The Command added that prayers were offered for the repose of the souls of the deceased officers and for strength for their families.
