Senator Austin Akobundu, the lawmaker representing Abia Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing persistent internal crises within the opposition party.
In a letter titled “Notice of Formal Resignation,” dated March 10, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Oloko, the senator announced that his resignation from the party takes immediate effect.
Akobundu, who expressed gratitude for the opportunities he received while serving under the platform of the party, said he took time to reflect on his journey with the PDP before arriving at the decision to step down.
He noted that his time in the party afforded him the privilege to serve in several strategic and critical capacities both within the party structure and in national service, describing the relationship between him and the PDP as mutually beneficial.
However, the senator stated that the prolonged and seemingly intractable crises that have engulfed the party over time played a significant role in his decision to resign.
According to him, after holding wide consultations with his associates and supporters, it became necessary for him to take what he described as a painful but inevitable step.
“At this time of our nation’s political evolution, the sad and seemingly intractable crises that have engulfed the party for so long… it has become pertinent that I take the very painful but necessary decision to resign my membership of the party,” part of the letter read.
Despite his departure, Akobundu extended his goodwill to the party, expressing hope that it would continue to contribute positively to national development and the service of the country.
