A political storm is gathering within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Owerri Zone, following emerging accusations on the party’s Owerri zonal chairman, Chief Justus Ogu, for allegedly receiving a financial inducement aimed at destabilizing the party structure in Mbaitoli LGA,reputed as the hub of Imo state’s democracy.
According to reliable sources within the party’s leadership in Owerri zone, Chief Ogu was reportedly said to be working in connivance with some undisclosed members of the opposition party and political opponents of the Gov.Hope Uzodimma to destabilize the APC in Mbaitoli LGA.
The purpose of the payment, insiders claim, was to sow discord and weaken the existing leadership in Mbaitoli LGA,also in a bid to hijack the party’s structure in both the local government and the Owerri zone at large.
To fulfill the expectations of his alleged sponsors, Chief Ogu has reportedly lent undue recognition to Kelechi Obi, the current Vice Chairman of APC in Mbaitoli, by addressing him as the “Acting Chairman” in various public fora.
This is despite the presence and legitimacy of the congress-elected chairman, Hon. Chinonye Agogbuo, whose mandate remains undisputed within the party ranks.
Party insiders described Kelechi Obi as a stooge of a prominent opponent of the Governor, alleging that his sudden elevation in party discourse is part of a broader plan to undermine the Governor’s influence and destabilize the APC from within.
Party faithful and stakeholders in Mbaitoli LGA have expressed concern over the growing tension, warning that such acts of internal subversion could have dire consequences for party unity and electoral prospects. They have called on the Imo State leadership of the APC to swiftly investigate the conduct of Chief Ogu and ensure that discipline and constitutional order are maintained.
“There is every need for the party at the state level to look critically into the activities of Chief Ogu and call him to order before the situation escalates,” said a senior APC member from the zone who requested anonymity.
As of the time of filing this report, Chief Justus Ogu has not publicly responded to the allegations.
