The All progressives Grand alliance (APGA), Imo State chapter, has accused the All progressives Congress (APC) and state governor, senator Hope Uzodinma of having failed Imolites economically and politically and also of being bereft of leadership qualities and ideas on how to restore peace, sanity and lead the state on the part of prosperity, wondering whether the present state of insecurity, fear and intimidation in the state were the shared prosperity promised the people at the commencement of the administration.
The party made these observations on Saturday, June 5, during an interactive briefing with newsmen at their state secretariate in Owerri.
The party which sees itself as the only political party of integrity in Nigeria today condemned the destruction of government property by unknown gunmen, incessant arrest, harassment and killing of innocent citizens by men in uniform, continued militarialization of Imo State by senator Hope Uzodinma, calling on Governor Uzodinma to withdraw all military personnel from the streets and roads of the state.
The state chairman of APGA, chief John Iwuala who spoke on behalf of the party, regretted that “Imo State which was known as the most peaceful state in the southeast has been sold to political buccaneers, political bandits and political lepers”, making Imo a “dreaded state to visit and a laughing stock to everyone”.
According to chief Iwuala: “we send a strong appeal to both the state government and the unknown sponsors of the unknown gunmen to understand that the same people they are fighting for, are seriously mourning, suffering and dying at the moment due to unnecessary and incessant killings of innocent citizens, burning and destruction of government properties, killing and destruction of the economy, and above militarialization of the state. Every Imo citizen is in total fear at the moment as no one and no where is safe anymore. Our government has woefully failed us by not taking proactive measures as the chief security officer (CSO) of the state”.
According to him, “Imo, as a matter of fact, has been sold to our enemies for power”, hence the failure of the present administration to prefer politicking and blame game, instead of living up to the expectation of the people in safeguarding lives and properties, stressing that as chief security officer (CSO) of the state, all Imo citizens are in his hands to protect from unwarranted molestation, harassment and intimidation from armed personnel in the state who are answerable to him.
Iwuala expressed the support of security men to sincerely eliminate hoodlums and criminals, especially those destroying government properties, attacking and killing security personnel, unnecessary sporadic shooting that have resulted in loss of lives after the unknown gunmen have struck and gone”.
He called on the state government to set up a high powered peace and reconciliation committee across all the strata of the state, irrespective of political party, saying that community leaders should also be made to work with security forces to identify criminals.
The APGA leader commiserated with the family of late Ahmed Gulak and the families of all policemen and Imolites who have lost their loved ones to the current insecurity in Imo. Iwuala stressed that Imolites are yearning for the restoration of peace to their state and offered the readiness of his party to assist the government with ideas on how to restore peace in the land, if officially called upon by the government, noting that the psyche of ndimo can readily be directed to embrace men in uniform as friends in times of distress.
