In the last few days, there has been palpable fear, panic and apprehension within the University community over the safety of staff and students due to the simmering communal crisis between Izzi and Ikwo communities.
The panic was heightened last week due to a viral online message and voice note calling on staff and students of the University who are from Izzi to go home to avoid being caught up by an imminent war between the two communities.
The situation has raised some concerns about the safety of staff and students of the University, from the esteemed parents and guardians of our students, and other stakeholders
The University Management wishes therefore, to note that staff and students of our University are safe and secure on campus, and that academic activities are going on without hitches.
The security agencies have been fully briefed on the situation at hand and they are working round the clock to ensure that the University campus remains peaceful and conducive for academic activities.
The University Management has also constituted a high-powered security committee made up of representatives of some security agencies, staff, students and members of the University host community to liaise with the appropriate authorities to ensure security within and around the campus.
The University Management wants to use this opportunity to reassure our students, their parents and guardians and other stakeholders that Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, is safe and secure, and that academic activities are going on without encumbrances.
Nevertheless, we wish to advise our staff and students to avoid travelling through the Nkwagu/Enyigba/Nwakpu road at night until normalcy is restored along that axis. They are also advised to avoid night outings and to make sure that they are in their respective hostels not later than 7pm, especially those living off campus.
The safety and security of our staff and students remains paramount to us, and the University Management is working assiduously to maintain it.
