Since the year, it does appear that the Imo State House of Assembly has been in a state of suspended animation. That legislative arm of government is a very Important part in the democratic business of States the world over. But the way it turned out to operate this year is less than comfortable. No thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic dislocations.
From about late March 2020, the Imo State House of Assembly went into lockdown, just like every other institution in Nigeria, in line with the directives given by the Federal Government, to stem the tide of rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the gradual easing out of the lock down gained momentum, the House opened plenary only to be shortly hit some members were said to have tested positive to the dreaded disease. The House was once more closed down for an upward of three months on the orders of the Imo State COVID-19 Committee, headed by Professor Maurice Iwuh.
As soon as the House was reopened, haven been certified Coronavirus free, it immediately went on its annual vacation. It gladdened the heart of Imo people, when early in the week, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information and the Judiciary Hon. Barrister Dominic Ezerioha announced the resumption of the House on Tuesday, September 29, 2020.
It is heart warming indeed that the House has resumed its plenary and other legislative duties. The Onion welcomes the House members and all other relevant functionaries of the House back to their legislative duties.
The Onion, however, wishes to remind the House that the task ahead of it is enormous, as it ought to double its efforts in order to cover its lost grounds. A number of near controversial issues, including the enactment of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) Bill passed by the Imo State House of Assembly and assented to by the State Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma, ought to be given adequate clarification in order to douse the spate of discomfortable discourse that have followed suit.
The Onion wishes to reiterate for the umpteenth time that the House of Assembly is the engine hub of the government of every state the world over, without which contributions there will be mouth gapping lacuna in the administrative procedures of government.
The Onion, therefore, urges the resumed members of the House, this time around, to approach legislative business with utmost dispatch and stallion concentration in order to achieve much before the close of the legislative year.
