There are palpable fears and apprehension as the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Imo State chapter elects its executive today
Impeccable sources told the Saturday Nigerian Horn that a consensus arrangement to select the new executives members is currently causing disaffection within the party.
The paper was reliable told that a former Minister has been “anointed” to lead the party, citing his maturity, wide contact, experience and reliability. The source said that the consensus agreement was reached by Okigwe Zone leaders and stakeholders through a committee headed by Emeka Ekwebelem and affirmed at the residence of Chief Achike Udenwa, the Amaifeke born former governor where it was alleged that Prof. Obinna Iheduru and Stanford Onyirimba, stepped down.
According to the source, the preferred candidate who was a foundation member of the party alongside late Chief I.D Nwoga, late Senator Emeka Echeruo, was described as a committed PDP member as a man who has a history of constituency.
However, Saturday Nigerian Horn scooped that some of the party members especially the young Turks rejected the alleged consensus arrangement describing the consensus candidate as too old to run a party which is in opposition in the State.
One of the aspirants told Saturday Nigerian Horn under anonymity that meeting are still ongoing to settle the impasse as he has not stepped down for anybody, stressing however that they will support any candidate that emerged winner.
“My brother, I am not stepping down for anybody. I, and my team are still strategizing to ensure that I emerge victorious at the congress, but at the end of the day, PDP, is one family and we will make sure that no crisis disrupt its quest to recover our stolen mandate from the present government in the Imo State.
But speaking with the Saturday Nigerian Horn on phone, a major stakeholder and former governorship aspirant under PDP, who also declined mention, said the party is on its way to destruction and death should the party went ahead and elect an “old man” who has passed his prime.
Analysts however described today’s PDP State Congress as a make or mar exercise for the party saying the party, could not afford to make any mistake as that will spell doom for its future existence
