The prevailing peace and calm at the Imo State University Campus Owerri was shattered Wednesday with gun shirts fired by rival cult groups which claimed two lives and left many injured.
The crisis which took the school by surprise was carried out by cult groups which its identities were not immediately disclosed as the panic it created caused students and other people doing business around the area to run for cover.
The incident occurred around the main gate area of the University and an eye witness account disclosed that young men wielding guns on approach to the University’s front gate opened fire which got the people running helter skelter.
The undergraduate eye witness who sought anonymity disclosed that the killers shot at their targets at close range before zooming leaving them to writhe in their own blood.
According to him, ‘the boys had guns shooting at their targets before zooming off. Two persons had given up the ghost before the arrival of the police men and before the security men in the school could reach there. Other gunshot victims were immediately sent to the hospital for attention.’’
On contact with the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr OrlandoIkeokwu, he confirmed the incident but did not give details.
The Imo Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Ladodo, disclosed that three suspects have been arrested and one locally made pistol was also recovered.
The spokesperson of the school Mr.RaphNjoku-Obi confirmed that one of the deceased was not a student of the institution but a student of the neighbouring AlvanIkoku Federal College of Education who runs a shop around the area.
Cult clashes have been a common feature among institutions of higher learning and have claimed numerous lives of students especially. The menace did not escape the Imo State University who over time have experienced such conflicts with varying degrees of incidents.
