The member representing Owerri North constituency in the Imo state House of Assembly, Hon. Philip Ejiogu has called for the urgent reconstruction of the Timber market at Naze, Relief market Ikenegbu extension and the road leading to Alaba market.
The motion which was raised by Ejiogu during House plenary last week, was seconded by representative of Owerri Municipal, Hon. Solomon Anukam and supported by other lawmakers.
He stated that the markets had since its inception been witnessing heavy economic activities, which had constantly led to heavy traffic of goods and persons that ply the road.
Ejiogu added that the traffic had contributed to the deplorable state of the roads.
The lawmaker pointed out that the issue has hampered the economic activities of the markets and slowed down it quota of contributions to the economy of the state as one of the commercial hubs that aids to boost the state economy.
Ejiogu opined that the construction of the roads he believes would not just economically develop the state but would also aid relieve the sufferings of the road users, especially the traders who according to him, had been complaining of their businesses not thriving as usually.
“Practically all the roads in the state are in bad shape, but there are certain areas which should be given special and urgent consideration due to their commercial viability in the state, maintaining that no state can progress economically without good durable roads.”
The legislators therefore called on the governor, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha to intervene in the reconstruction of the roads, and to urgently create linking roads to the markets which according to them would be an alternative route for the traders and the road users pending the reconstruction.
